Productivity change in cassava production in North-Central Nigeria was estimated using secondary data from 1993 to 2016, obtained from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agriculture Statistical (FAOSTAT) data banks. This is because Nigeria is known to be the world's largest producer and consumer of cassava and the knowledge of its productivity is vital for economic development. Root crops' consumption in Nigeria has risen to about 214kg per person and previous studies have not linked the demand or supply of cassava to its productivity changes. Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index (MTFPI) based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)was used in analyzing efficiency change and technical progress to observe their contributions to the cassava productivity changes, while To bit regression analysis was used to examine the determinants of the productivity changes. The result revealed that technical efficiency change and technological change contributed about 0.9% and 3.6%, respectively, to the achievement of the 1.4% cassava productivity growth. To bit regression indicated all the factors (Climatic factor, Government policy (ATA), capital, labour and capital-labour), except institutional to be positive and significantly related with cassava productivity growth at P ≤ 0.05, P ≤ 0.05, P ≤ 0.001 P ≤ 0.001 and P ≤ 0.01, respectively. This suggests that increase in each of them led to increase in cassava productivity growth over the period studied. The study, therefore, recommends that cassava farmers should be trained on farm techniques and resource allocation to increase cassava productivity growth in the study area.
