Abstract

Though Nigeria is the leading producer of cassava globally, profitability of the cassava enterprises is inadequate largely due to poor value-chain development. This paper assessed the access to research and development (R&D) and the implication on enterprise profitability among cassava-garri farmers in Ogun State. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 287 cassava-garri farmers. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, gross margin, t-test, and logit regression analyses. Inferences were drawn at P<0.05. Results showed that 58.2% of the respondents were between 40-49 years old and 80% had less than secondary education. Less than one hectare of farmland was put to cassava cultivation by majority of the respondents (65.2%). Most of the respondents had up to twenty years of experience in production and processing of cassava but only 43% were active in cooperative. The respondents mostly use manual and crude processing techniques. The t-test showed that the average gross margin (Proxy for profitability) for those with access to R&D (N590998.73±1000608.44≈$1432.72) was significantly higher than those without access (N174410.22±122459.36≈$422.81). Result of the logit regression showed that factors such as education, cooperative participation, access to extension significant factors influencing respondents’ access of R&D. The study therefore, recommended that efforts should be directed towards enhancing these factors that influence respondents’ access to R&D this will improve the performance of cassava-garri enterprise which is expected to contribute to increasing the business profits.
