Abstract

The Lagos lagoon suffers from serious problem of water pollution due to uncontrolled domestic and agrochemical contamination and lack of sustainable wastewater management. This study is aimed to evaluate the effects of water quality and heavy metals on the activities of liver enzymes in Sarotherodon melanotheron collected from Lagos lagoon from June to August 2011. The Physico-chemical parameters as well as the biochemical profile were measured following appropriate protocols. The results showed that physico-chemical parameters varied significantly (p<0.050) throughout the sampling period. The mean concentration of Zn, Pb and Cu in surface water were raised above FEPA permissible limit, while Hg was found below FEPA limit. The mean concentration values of Zn, Pb, Hg and Cu in the fish tissues were found below the FEPA permissible limit. The results also revealed that the biochemical parameters were; AST (91.24±33.33), ALT (54.09±36.49) and ALP (118.81±84.71). ALP had positive and significant relationship with Nitrate, Phosphate, Sulphate and BOD while AST and ALT had non-significant relationship with the water physico-chemical parameters. Zn was the only mineral in water that had significant relationship with ALP while the tissue minerals did not have significant relationship with AST, ALT and ALP.Therefore, the observed changes in the activities of liver enzyme due to the physico-chemical parameters and heavy metals concentrations in water could be ranked as possible biomarker of environment stressors.
