Abstract

An 84 day feeding experiment investigated the efficacy of the dietary supplementation of Water Leaves (WL), Spinach Leaves (SL) extracts and Chloramphenicol (CHRL) (positive control) on growth, haematology and immunity of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings against Aeromonas hydrophila infection. Experimental diets consist of control (0%), WL2(1%), WL3(2%), SL4(1%), SL5(2%), CHRL6 (30mg/kg), (WL+SL)7 (2%), (WL+CHRL)8 (2%), (SL+CHRL)9 (2%) and (WL+SL+CHRL)10 (3%) were fed twice daily to the experimental fish (4.11±0.01g) at 3% body weight. Biological indices, haematological, plasma biochemistry and blood serum indices were determined using standard methods. Clarias gariepinus were induced with A. hydrophila at 6.09log10CFU/ml intraperitoneally and fed the different diets to assess their relative percentage of survival (RPS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA at P= 0.05. The result indicated that fish fed the diets supplemented with WL, SL and CHRL enhanced weight gain and specific growth rate. The values of haematological, plasma biochemistry and blood serum indices were higher (P < 0.05) in treated groups when compared to the control diet and the value obtained before challenge test. The RPS against A. hydrophila was higher in treated groups than the control (0%). The result suggested these plants enhanced growth, haemato –immunology and make C. gariepinus juveniles more resistance to A. hydrophila infection.
