Abstract

Mature male Nigerian indigenous chicken genotypes kept at poultry unit of Teaching and Research Farm at University of Uyo were used to determine the effect of genotype on semen quality and growth traits. The data collected on growth traits and semen quality were subjected to General Linear Model (GLM) analysis of variance (ANOVA). The weekly body weight (1.690.02g to 2.330.03g), comb length (1.860.18mm to 2.140.06mm) and breast girth (29.750.62mm to 31.130.69mm) of Naked Neck were significantly (p<0.05) lower when compared to Normal and Frizzled Feathered genotypes. Effect of genotype was not observed in semen motility and pH; however, the highest values were observed across the weeks in Naked Neck. Significant effect (p<0.05) of genotype was observed in semen concentration. Naked Neck had the lowest values (256.0054.83 to 282.0080.85) when compared with the other two genotypes that differs significantly. Semen quality traits differ among the genotypes.
