Abstract

Anisaldehyde compound insecticidal potential against infestation of stored maize seeds by Sitophilus zeamais was assessed in the laboratory. The compound was made into 2% concentration and mixed separately with maize seeds at 10µl, 20µl, 30µl, 40µl and 50µl /20 g of maize in each petri-dish. Sitophilus zeamais survival was observed at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h post-treatment. Adult emergence and seed weight-loss were equally assessed. Regression probit analysis indicated that 50µl of anisaldehyde was required to achieve 76.67% insect mortality after 24 h and 100% mortality after 96 h of exposure. There was no adult emergence in seeds treated with 50µl and 100% inhibition rate of S. zeamais .It was evident that anisaldehyde compound exhibit insecticidal potency on S. zeamais infestation on stored maize grains. The effect of the dosages were lethal to insects and the action of anisaldehyde altered the function of the neurotransmitter and digestive enzymes.
