Abstract

Environmental degradation problems associated with the sole use of inorganic fertilizers and the low and slow nutrients release from sole use of organic manure prompted integrated nutrients management research. Field trials were conducted to assess the effects of integrated application of poultry manure (PM) and NPK fertilizer on yield and nutritional quality of carrot at Igba in the rainforest agroecological zone of Nigeria. NPK fertilizer at 0, 100, 200 kg ha-1were integrated with PM at 0, 5, and 10 kg ha-1 in a 32 factorial, arranged in randomized complete block design and treatments were replicated three times. Data collected were analyzed using Statistical Analysis System Institute package. The experimental soil was acidic (pH 5.5) and low in nitrogen (0.12 g kg -1). Plant height, leaf length, gross and marketable root yield, crude protein, and fibre contents of carrot were significantly higher in plots with integrated application of PM and NPK than plots with sole application of either of the amendments. Integrated application of 10 t ha-1 PM and 200 kg ha-1 NPK had the best growth parameters, gross and marketable root yield, root crude protein, and fibre contents, which were not significantly (P > 0.05) different from carrots in plots with integrated application of 5 t ha-1 PM and 200 kg ha-1 NPK. In the second cropping season, there were reductions in the growth and root yield parameters in plots with sole application of NPK while there were improvements in root yield in plots with integrated application of PM and NPK. Integration of PM and NPK fertilizer was more effective in enhancing growth, root yield and nutritional quality of carrot on long term basis than sole application of NPK fertilizer.
