Assessment of vegetation change can help to assess the environmental effects of vegetation cover change more clearly. This study assessed the change in vegetation in Omo Biosphere Reserve from 1993 to 2023. Landsat imageries 5 TM of 1993, 7 ETM of 2003, 8 OLI/TIR of 2013 and 9 OLI/TIR of 2023 were obtained and processed. The data acquired were analyzed using a random forest algorithm on the ArcGis 10.8 software to perform the land use land cover classification. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to determine the greenness level of Omo Biosphere Reserve between 1993 and 2023. Forest reduced from 95.33% to 93.70%, built-ups increased from 0.36% to 1.11%, bare land decreased from 1.96% to 0.70%, farm/shrubland increased from 2.13% to 4.19%, while waterbodies increased from 0.20% to 0.27% from 1993 to 2023. The mean NDVI values decreased from 0.355 in 1993 to 0.337 in 2023. In conclusion, the study area has lost its greenness over the years and this could be traced to over-harvesting and consequent agricultural activities. Therefore, massive regeneration and reforestation programs should be encouraged and effected on the forest reserves with functional policies.
