Abstract

Agroforestry system is the practice of growing trees alongside with annual crops, raising livestock, and other forms of agricultural practices on the same plot of land in order to maximize productivity. Agroforestry system can solve many problems of intensive farming in one fell swoop. This study sought to appraise the relationship between economic benefits of agroforestry system and food security among arable crop farmers in Ido Local Government, Oyo State. A multi-stage random sampling method was used in choosing the respondents for this study. In classifying the households on the basis of being food secure and food insecure, the food security index estimation through expenditure method was used to determine the food security status of the individual households in the study area. The result showed that 48% of the total sampled households were food insecure while 52% of the sampled households were food secure. The study concluded that there is a significant relationship between agrosilviculture and agrosilvopastora types of agroforestry systems and food security of the small-scale arable crop farmers in the study area. Therefore, it was recommended that Government should concede some of their forest reserves to arable crop farmers to practice agroforestry system while credit facilities should also be made available and accessible to them in order to boost their production capacity while agrosilviculture and agrosilvopastora systems should be encouraged as far as agroforestry systems practices are concerned.
