Abstract

Poultry production is a vital component of the worldwide agricultural economy, particularly in developing countries where it greatly enhances rural livelihoods and food security. For example, honey, widely known for its antimicrobial benefits, has been used to treat wounds and infections in various livestock species. This study examined the effect of groundwater treated with Christmas melon and honey used as natural antibiotics on the physico-chemical, heavy metal and microbial quality of poultry birds. The physical, chemical and bacteriological analysis of water samples were carried out. High level of contamination in pH, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Potassium, Chloride and heavy metals such as (Zinc, Lead, Iron, chromium and Copper indicates severe water quality degradation. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the honey, Christmas melon, and combined treatments were higher than the guidelines for drinking water given as of 250 mg/L, which may affect taste and increase the mineral load in the water. Natural antibiotics should be used as an alternative because it is cost effective.
