Abstract

Clean energy lies at the center of sustainable development goals. This study examines clean cooking energy usage and health status of women agripreneurs in peri-urban areas of Ekiti State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling procedure was employed in the selection of respondents. Primary data were collected for the purpose of the study using structured questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation analysis and logistic regression model. The results showed that the mean age of the respondents was 36 years while the mean household size was 6 persons. Majority of the respondents had only primary education. Few of the respondents used clean fuel while kerosene served as the most utilized primary cooking fuel choice in the study area. Fuel stacking was a common strategy among respondents. However, most of the women are willing to switch to clean fuels. The regression analysis results showed that the price of fuel significantly (p<0.01) but negatively influenced the use of clean fuel while awareness of carbon-free fuel, age, income and marital status had significant positive effect on clean fuel adoption. Strong correlation was observed between the use of solid fuel and severe headache, chest pain and body pains. The study recommends more awareness on health and environmental effects of clean fuel. Clean fuel should be made accessible and affordable to Nigerians.
