Abstract

Excessive body weight is linked a number of ailments and diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Food commodities with the potential for weight reduction can help prevent these diseases. The objective of this study is to use animal experiments to examine both the fat-reducing properties of sesame milk, as well as its impact on blood glucose. Sesame milk was prepared and analyzed for proximate composition, invitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibitory properties. The prepared sesame milk was fed as a diet to experimental animals and the fat reducing potentials of the animals were observed over a period of 21 days. The serum and liver samples of the experimental animals were analyzed for in-vivo α-glucosidase enzyme inhibitory activities and lipid profile. Blood glucose test was conducted. The result of the proximate composition of the milk revealed that the moisture content, protein content, fibre content, fat content, ash content and carbohydrate are 90.15%, 2.64%, 0.76%, 5.01%, 0.73% and 0.72% respectively. A significant increase in the inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes was observed which indicates a reduced level of sugar in the bloodstream. The study showed that there was a significant decrease in blood sugar of animal group induced with diabetes and fed with sesame milk compared to those not fed with sesame milk. It also showed a significant weight loss in animals fed with sesame milk than those not fed. Conclusively, substituting sesame milk as a diet for diabetic patients and patients who are obese or at a risk of obesity may help reduce their blood glucose level and manage their body weight.
